6 Tips for Overcoming Cold Feet

Planning a wedding is stressful and sometimes, it can lead to your stressing out over the marriage as well. When you are worked up about the future, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get married to the man you love.

Instead, it could be a sign that you need some extra help with the wedding. There are many different strategies you can use to get over cold feet when you are certain the man you love is the man you want to marry.

Tip #1: Write it Down

Spend a little time with a journal and write down some of your fears. Once you have it down on paper, you might realize how silly your fears are.

If it isn’t that easy, try working out some solutions to the problems and write those down as well. One example is that you might fear losing your own identity when you get married. A solution could be having a monthly girls night out with your friends.

Tip #2: Differentiate

Think about the roots of your cold feet.

Are you simply stressed about the wedding? Are you nervous about the people who will be staring at you on the big day?

If you have specific concerns about your relationship, you might want to look into your feelings a bit deeper. Otherwise, you likely have cold feet and you can get past it by pushing forward.

Tip #3: Take a Break

You might feel uncertain about the wedding because you are spending too much time on it. Take a break from the planning or hand it over to someone else for a few days.

The wedding plans will still be there after the weekend when you are ready to take it on again.

Choose one night a week and make it a No Wedding Night. You will not talk about the wedding, think about it, or plan anything for it. Simply enjoy time with your fiancé, friends, or on your own.

A break can help you get away from the nerves and enjoy life again.

Tip #5: Make a Positive List

Think about all of the good things about your fiancé and work up a list of reasons you want to be married to him.

Think through some of the happiest moments you’ve enjoyed in your relationship including when you fell in love, how you got engaged and how you first met.

Remembering the good details will warm your feet up in no time.

Tip #6: Talk to Married Couples

Do you have a friend who has been happily married for a while?

Talk to that couple and ask them how they got through the ceremony and the hard parts of marriage after the big day. Watching someone else who has gone through it and made it to the other side can comfort you out of your nerves.

Bonus: Don’t Worry

Nearly everyone gets cold feet at some point or another.

It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get married. Most of the time, you are simply nervous about the ceremony, stressed over details, or questioning things you really should examine before you get married.

Use one or more of the above strategies to remind yourself why you agreed to get married in the first place. You will likely be able to get over your nerves and have a genuine smile on your face on the big day.
